Welcome to Dundee Floorball Club

Dundee Northern Lights were established in 2004. The main aim of the club is to promote the sport of floorball in the Tayside area. From humble beginnings Dundee Northern Lights now have around 30 club members and have had increasing success in the Northern League.

Dundee Finish 2nd In Fife 3's Tournament

20th June 2010

This Sunday saw Dundee Northern Lights compete in a 3 a side competition at Fife Institute of Sport in Glenrothes.

After 2 enjoyable games against Balwearie and St Andrews (and 2 wins!) the Lights went on to play and beat Edinburgh in the competition semi-final, this lined up a final against Glenrothes.

Dundee took first blood but after having 2 goals disalowed for apparently not crossing the line Glenrothes went on to take a 3 goal lead. A period of comeback in the second saw Dundee come within striking distance of a win but Glenrothes were just too strong on the day!

Congratulations to Glenrothes for winning this competition and to the pair of St. Andrews players (Lindsay and Niki? was it?) who switched to Dundee to boost our number of females in the squad (this was a requirement of the competition and after Dundees other female player having to pull out of the games action).

Dundee Finish 4th In GB Nationals

23rd May 2009

The GB Nationals were recently held at Meadowbank Stadium in Edinburgh. The best teams from all over the UK played in 2 days of great floorballing action in which Dundee were by far the best placed Scottish team with a respectable 4th place finish.

The London Vikings, who Dundee had in their group, went on to win the competition in a thrilling final against the London Sharks eventually winning in overtime with a golden goal.

The other rankings of Scottish teams were as follows.

Dundee Northern Lights 4th
Edinburgh RBS 6th
Aberdeen Oilers 7th
Balwearie Thunder 9th
Glenrothes Growwl 10th
Balwearie Lightning 12th

We also had quite a large article in the local Dundee paper, the Evening Telegraph, which we will try and get online soon!

Scottish Cup (Partial :-) ) Success For Lights

12th April 2009

After a win over Glenrothes in the last Northern League games and grabbing 4th in the league Lights set up an encounter with Aberdeen in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup held at Fife Institute in Glenrothes.

Dundee set out as underdogs against an in form Aberdeen straight off the back of their league title the previous month. While the bets were on Aberdeeen to take this game comfortably Dundee set out to give them a game and went up after a few minutes in the first period.

Aberdeen failed to offer a response to the early lead and lost 3 more ending the game 4-0 to Dundee and setting up a place in the final against Chapel. This was also rookie goalkeeper Ben Milnes first shut out in a competitive game. Aberdeen were visibly shaken by their comprehensive defeat and were left licking their wounds with a 3rd v 4th place tie against Edinburgh.

The final saw the Lights take on Chapel. A full benched Chapel went 3-0 up after the first period then added another 3 in the second to lead by 6 -0 against a 7 man Dundee squad after the loss of David Shaw and Radmil Kranda after the Aberdeen match. Still with only 7 players an uplifted Dundee frustrated an on form Chapel squad limiting the damage in the first 2 periods then coming out in the 3rd to outscore them 3-2 to end the game 8-3 to Chapel. For 7 players to come through and take the game to the eventual winners in the final period of a 3 * 20 minute game is a testiment to the guys (and girl :-) ) who played on the day.

For a club that actively encourages all levels of ability in the team at both training and games there is no question that we were happy with our progress this season making our second Scottish Cup final in the short history of the club and a 4h place finish in the league.

Dundee in Local Paper

16th March 2009

Dundee get a mention in the local paper the Evening Telegraph after they run a story on the last games of the season.

Dundee Nothern Lights needed maximum points to leapfrog two teams and secure the last play-off spot in the latest round of fixtures in Glenrothes.

Light's first match against bottom club Balwearie Lightning saw the Taysiders run out 11-0 winners.

It came down to the last match of the regular season between Dundee and Glenrothes, who only needed a draw to go through to next months play-offs.

Glenrothes, last season's league runners-up, fielded a strong side and jumped to a 1-0 lead early in the first period.

Lights equalised then built a 3-1 lead in the second, but the hosts came back to lead 4-3 entering the final period.

The Dundee side equalised and went ahead 5-4, so, with one minute left, the Fifers pulled their keeper for an extra atacker.

Lights scored twice to seal a 7-4 win to clinch the final play-off position.

Scorers for Dundee in the two matches - Colin Ferguson (5), Stepan Rychtar (5), Anders Jinnelov (4), Radmil Kranda (2), David Mansson (1), Jim Wilde (1).

The play-offs take place on April 12th in Glenrothes.

Top Points for Lights

8th March 2009

Today saw the this seasons final Northern League tournament games held at FIPRE in Glenrothes. Dundee were up against Balwearie Lightning who were defeated 11-0 by an on form Dundee squad. The second game of the day was against Glenrothes. This was a tough game with the Lights going 3-1 up going into the 3rd but soon loosing 2 quick goals to take the game to a draw at 3-3. 3 further goals by Dundee and one from Glenrothes took the game to 6-4 with only a few seconds left on the clock. Glenrothes then pulled their keeper but gave up another goal with a few seconds to go to end the game 7-4 to Dundee, our second win of the day and only our second win against the Glenrothes team in Dundee's history!

Dundee would like to congratulate Aberdeen for taking the top spot in the league this season (although we should remind Aberdeen that it was us that took the point from Chapel that allowed them to finish top ;-) ). Chapel came in second with Edinburgh 3rd and Dundee 4th. Propping up the foot of the table are Glenrothes, Balwearie Thunder and Balwearie Lightning.

This is the first time in the history of Dundee's involvement in the Northern League that a team other than Glenrothes or Chapel picked up top spot so it was a historic afternoons floorball and by far the best team in the league this season took the trophy.

Lights Players in Friendly 5's Winning Team

14th September 2008

Today saw the Friendly 5's competition taking place in Fife Institute in Glenrothes. Lights Paul Shaw and Jim Wilde competed in the winning side of the competition only dropping one game in the tournamemt. Congratulations also to the 3 Aberdeen players who were involved in the squad. Although it was supposed to be a friendly 5 a side the tournament ended up being 4 on 4 which lead to more goals and more exciting games.

It was also the first time that a few of the Lights have played in a floorball event and they were knocking in goals as well so congratulations to them all.

Dundee would like to take this oppertunity to thank the organisers of the event, the Northern League Committee, for such a gret days floorball.

Lights make local press

7th September 2008

The Dundee Northern Lights have made it into the local press this week with the news that local player Colin Ferguson has been training with the GB national squad.
